Sustainable Salmon Arm

Sustainable means forever

Salmon Arm councillor Flynn has called for removal of CASSSA from the group studying the "information gaps" surrounding the "Dumb Centre" proposal.

Dear Councillor Flynn:

Good for you. CASSSA has a lot of gall to host a rally in opposition to the Smart Centres proposal.

Similar citizens’ groups in hundreds of cities across North America show precisely how dangerous the situation can be. Such groups have misled councils to reject these valuable meccas of consumerism, and instead have organized groups to rebuild local businesses and maintain a "sense of community." How lame is that!

I’d much rather see those useless wetlands paved over. And when the box stores move on and leave an empty shell in a few short years (as has happened in so many other communities), we can take comfort in knowing that we did our best to get people into their cars to drive to shopping, to weed out those inefficient local businesses, to replace those wasteful high paying jobs with low paying part time jobs, and to do all the usual things that help turn a community into a vibrant strip mall.

City councils only have to listen to the citizens once every three years, and then to make the hard decisions on their own. The last thing we need in Salmon Arm is to have an informed and involved citizens’ group consistently articulate its position and offer alternatives which stand in the way of real progress.

I agree with you. Turf CASSSA out!

Allowing them to continue to have any sort of formal recognition from city council would be far too...well...democratic.

Keep up the good work.

Regards,

Rick Shea
