Sustainable Salmon Arm

Sustainable means forever

Sent to the local print media today:

Dear Sir:

If the proportion of speakers at the recent public hearing who were in favor of the so-called “Smart” centre development is any indication, those who continue to claim that they speak for some sort of “silent majority” in favor of box stores are clearly out of touch with reality. Yet they continue to harp that Salmon Arm needs “progress” – presumably the same sort of progress as Kelowna and other strip mall cities. Progress can mean many things, including progress in the quality of life rather than the quantity of cheap stuff available on store shelves.

Yet, in letters to editors, columns, and other media opportunities, the box-heads shrilly continue to try to bully us into regressing to the consumerist excesses of the 20th Century. In doing so, they are clearly demonstrating that they are anti-local business, anti-environment, anti-community, and anti-sustainability.

Rather than striving to be the biggest, how about setting our sights higher than the failures of other cities? How about striving to be the best?

And for those boasting that they continue to drive to Vernon or Kamloops to shop, Peak Oil has a little surprise for you.

Local first!

Sincerely,

Rick Shea
